Weather Station Sensor Placing

Sensor placing
As supplied the sensors are grouped together to be placed high up on a mast.
However, the standard for temperature measurement is around 4 or 5 ft above ground
and the rain gauge around a foot or two above ground.  Thus the group is best split up
with the wind sensors placed as high above ground as possible and the others lower down.

To this end the cable from the wind vane to the temperature/transmitter unit may be
extended using an RJ11 extension cable.  The join should be protected from the weather.
However, I found I was getting interference picked up on the long cable causing data
corruption in the temperature graph.  To cure this I replaced the cables with one 4 core
screened cable soldered into the wind vane unit, with RJ11 plug on the other end and the
screen connected to the battery negative of the transmitter/temperature/humidity unit.

Outdoor Sensors
This photo shows the wind sensors at the top of a 20ft mast with the temperature/humidity
sensor and transmitter unit on a shorter post about 5ft high with my own Stevenson screen.
The circular screen shown here was later replaced by a more traditional rectangular type.

The rain gauge is lower still at a couple of feet above ground inside my own rain collection
system.

Details of the Stevenson screen and rain gauge are given in the Sensor Modifications page.
